what is a Giclee?

Giclee (jhee-clay) derives from the French meaning "to spray." This newest method of producing highest quality reproductions represents an elevation in printmaking technology.

The giclee printing process involves spraying microscopic dots of ink onto fine quality paper or canvas. On paper, the inks are actually absorbed slightly and blend to create fine art reproductions that are often difficult to distinguish from the originals.

Giclee typically represents an elevation in printmaking technology. Images are high resolution digital scans printed with quality inks on various substrates and provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.

Giclees are also called "digital prints" or "inkjet prints" because of the new techniques and equipment used to produce the image. These are fast becoming one of the most acceptable methods of fine art reproduction and considered highly acceptable prints by collectors, museums and galleries.

Normally, giclees are printed in limited amounts, one at time. The orginal artwork may also be reproduced in varying sizes maintaining the integrity of the artwork. As with any fine art reproduction, your print should be properly framed and protected from direct sunlight.

This process makes print collecting an exciting new approach to building an impressive and worthy portfolio at a fraction of the cost of acquiring original artwork, yet still enjoying the highest quality of collectible art.
